The Polish Princess has arrived safely, we're up and about to leave for a nice greasy spoon breakfast before trekking down to Providence for the day. However, in all the recent hubub, I almost forgot -- the Oscar noms have been announced. Get out that recipe for "Blood Diamond-tinis" or "Little Miss Sunshine Fondue" and print out the ballots -- it's Academy Awards Party Season!
Friday MeMe: Predictions? Surprises? Thoughts on the 79th Annual noms/awards?
BLOGORELLI: Since I've seen a total of, oh, maybe two of these movies, I'll say "Little Miss Sunshine" for any category it's in and Helen MIrren for "The Queen" because she has Hype. Otherwise, I'm mostly in it for the SciTech Awards .
p.s. I believe the Oscars web site is using Century Gothic this year, quite a striking choice, aesthetically. { Golf clap }

The Oscars have never been about recognizing and rewarding the best in film for that given year. It is more to decorate the films made by their friends in Hollywood and the people who gave the most lucrative handshakes. This year is a little different. In trying to tame the extreme backlash heard last year after another mediocre film won best picture ( see Shakespeare in Love, A Beautiful Mind, Chicago, The English Patient, etc. ) it seems this year the Academy has seen fit to nominate half to top films/performances and half to their benefactor's films.
Best Actor: Gosling, O'Toole and Whitaker gave worthy performances while Will and Leo are noted because they are Will and Leo.
Prediction: O'Toole.
Supporting Actor: Lots of meh here.
Prediction: Arkin or Murphy eventhough Haley probably deserves it.
Best Actress: The greyer the better as this will come down to Mirren or Dench.
Prediction: My gut says the Dame while my head says the Queen.
Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer Hudson.
Prediction: Jennifer Hudson.
Director: Could go any direction. I'd like to see Marty get it but if he doesn't it will just be further proof that the Academy knows nothing about film.
Prediction: ?
Best Picture: Departed, Iwo Jima and the Queen are considered the best films. So...
Prediction: Little Miss Sunshine or Babel.

this year's interesting bc there weren't any huge blockbuster movies that received a ton of awards. everything seems really spread out and many of the movies were somewhat under the radar until "award's season" began. that being said, here are my pics:
actor in a supporting role:
Alan Arkin, the award will prob. go to Eddie Murphy
lead actor:
Leo, although this will likely go to Forest Whitaker
actress in a lead role:
Helen Mirren (The Queen)
actress in supporting role:
this is really a toss up. I know Jennifer Hudson won the Globe, but I'm thinking maybe Cate Blanchett
best picture: I'm going to go with the Departed, but I think this one is wide open too...
It should be fun to watch!!!
