Thank you, Ania, for alerting The Prof and I to the fact that we are marrying on "International Talk Like a Pirate Day" 2009. (And sorry that your last name was misspelled on the Save the Date envelope!) We've been grasping at straws for a theme, and now -- BAM! -- like a lightning bolt, everything is clear. Mark can swing into the ceremony on a rope, and maybe the best man can wear an eye patch. Obviously, pirates loved to drink and have raucous celebrations, so those historical facts pretty much cover for anyone who enjoys the cocktail hour a little too much. Do we think that actual pirates ever traveled as far inland as Western Pennsylvania? No matter, I can probably convince Dadorelli that we need to obtain a canon and fire it several times (for authenticity.)
According to the official TLAP site, "And that's what's fun about Talk Like a Pirate Day specifically, and talking like a pirate in general....It's powerful, yet harmless. Perhaps, dare we suggest it, the ultimate aphrodisiac. Try it!"
Anyone makes a crack about a plank and my wedding night, though, will be promptly kicked in the balls.
(Below, a few things I found on Etsy which we could work into the pirate theme)

I'm getting Married 9/19 as well. People thought we were joking about having a Pirate Theme... until they got our Save the Dates.
55 fabulous Pirate words and phrases a la Magnetic Poetry.
Good luck! And happy planning!
